The perfect accompaniment for the bright lively flavours of the chilli and ginger sauce is the 2007 Farmgate Gewurztraminer from Hawkes Bay. Off dry and bursting with lush flavours of Turkish delight, ginger and anise, its light enough for fish and bright enough for Asian inspired spiced dishes.
The Farmgate brand grew out of the Ngatarawa Road vineyard. Backed by the first family of New Zealand wine, the Corbans, the concept seeks to promote the character of the people and geography of the Hawkes Bay region through matching wines to produce and the producers themselves.
The Farmgate Gewurztraminer is matched to local ‘saucerer’ Noel Crawford, famous for his aromatic sauces, preserves and condiments using natural exotic ingredients. With the word ‘Gewurz’ meaning ‘spicy’ it’s not only a perfect palate match, but also a tidy little verbal partner!
Originating in the Alsace region, this variety of Gewurztraminer is grown in two vineyards selected for their low yields and ripe fruit resulting in a full-bodied palate with luxurious texture. It has been well very received, with Wine Orbit giving it a coveted five star review, “This is a beautifully fashioned Gewurztraminer. It’s elegantly perfumed showing subtle floral and spice notes with a touch of stone fruits. The palate is concentrated with satin smooth texture and gently acidity.”
Other wines in the family include a Sauvignon Blanc paired with organic farmer, Clyde Potter, a Chardonnay paired with cheese-maker, Inacio Guimaraes and a Cabernet Merlot matched to Venison Farmer, Marcus Kynoch.
